This novelty ceramic teapot is a commemorative piece commissioned for the millennium by the Newcastle-upon-Tyne tea merchants, Ringtons Ltd. Designed by Paul Cardew for Cardew Design, the teapot is modelled in the form of a traditional kitchen dresser or Welsh dresser. It is constructed from glazed earthenware with a high-gloss caramel-brown glaze. The dresser is populated with numerous miniature accessories, including Ringtons-branded tea caddies, a Ringtons newspaper, and various pieces of miniature blue and white patterned dinnerware reminiscent of Maling ware. A black and white cat is depicted sleeping atop a newspaper on the dresser top. The drawers are detailed with gold-toned handles. The base features a comprehensive gilded backstamp stating: RINGTONS LTD TEA MERCHANTS ALGERNON ROAD NEWCASTLE ON-TYNE 1907-2000 RINGTONS MILLENNIUM CELEBRATION TEAPOT Hand crafted by Cardew Design Exclusively for Ringtons Limited LIMITED EDITION 3800/7500. The base is also hand-signed in gold ink as P. Cardew.
