A mid-20th-century monk’s bench or hall settle, constructed from dark-stained oak in the Jacobean Revival style. The piece features a high, three-panelled backrest. The top rail is decorated with a continuous row of carved lunette or fan-shaped motifs. The central panel is further embellished with a carved architectural arch design. The bench is fitted with distinctive armrests, each terminating in a hand-carved lion sejant figure. The seat comprises a hinged lid that opens to reveal a deep storage compartment within the base. The front of the base is dual-panelled, repeating the carved arch motif found on the backrest. The bench is supported by a simple plinth base. No maker’s marks or labels are visible.
