A set of late Victorian oak side chairs designed in the Flemish Neo-Renaissance style. Each chair features a high backrest with a deeply carved Green Man mask? cresting flanked by acanthus leaf scrolls. The central back section is inset with an arched panel of mustard-gold velvet, bordered by a decorative gimp trim. The back frame is supported by double barley-twist uprights with foliate-carved connector blocks. The overstuffed seats are upholstered in matching mustard-gold velvet and notably feature a large central wooden boss or button. The chairs are raised on barley-twist front legs and square-section rear legs, all united by matching barley-twist H-stretchers. The oak construction features a dark-stained and polished finish, accentuating the high-relief foliate and grotesque carvings typical of the Renaissance Revival period.
