A comprehensive forty-four piece Denby stoneware dinner and tea service in the Greenwheat pattern, designed by Albert Colledge. Each piece features a hand-painted wheat stalk motif with ears in shades of blue, red, and green on a speckled cream ground. The pieces are typically accented with a deep bottle-green glaze to the interiors, lids, and saucers. The set comprises a teapot and lid, a lidded butter dish, a milk jug, a small cream jug, a lidded sugar bowl, a small decorative vase or ewer, four egg cups, a pair of salt and pepper shakers, and a selection of tea cups, saucers, dinner plates, side plates, and a small rectangular dish. The underside of the pieces bears a printed backstamp with the word Greenwheat in cursive script above an oval containing the word DENBY. To the left of the oval is MADE IN ENGLAND, to the right is OVEN-PROOF, and below is a wheat stalk graphic. To the far right is the facsimile signature AColledge. This pattern was originally introduced in 1956 and became one of the factory’s most iconic and long-running designs.
