This antique hand-carved wooden dough riser, also known as a bread preparation board, is attributed to French folk art traditions based on its specific form and decorative elements. The object is monoxylous, having been hewn from a single solid block of dense, dark-toned hardwood. It features a waisted rectangular profile with continuous scalloped or crenelated carving along the lateral edges. The upper surface is embellished with two centrally placed, hand-incised circular motifs, each depicting an eight-spoke flower or solar design. At one end, a shallow rectangular trough has been hollowed directly into the timber, containing a central projecting tongue. The underside is designed with two integral block feet carved from the primary mass to provide a stable, low-profile base. The wood displays a rich, dark patina and textures characteristic of prolonged domestic use.
Length: 31.5 inches (80 cm).
