A mid-19th-century needlework sampler by M. A. Briggs, worked in cross-stitch on a coarse-weave natural linen ground. The composition is arranged in vertical rows, featuring the alphabet in double uppercase letters from A to Z, a numeric sequence from 1 to 9, and decorative geometric borders. The right-hand section is inscribed with the maker’s name M A Briggs and dated April 1843, flanked by two stylised evergreen trees. The needlework is executed in terracotta red and olive green threads. It is presented in a dark-stained wooden frame under glass, mounted in a landscape orientation despite the vertical nature of the design.
