This is a substantial collection of personal, military, and educational ephemera dating from the mid-1940s to the mid-1950s, largely belonging to an individual identified as Mr I. G. F. Smith. The archive provides a historical record of connections between the United Kingdom and colonial Hong Kong.
The collection includes a complete issue of the Hong Kong Sunday Herald, Volume No. 173, dated Sunday, 2 January 1949. The front page features lead stories regarding North China Withdrawal? and Real Estate Owners Want Law Changed, with period advertisements for Eterna watches and Coca-Cola.
Naval interest is represented by several brown paper envelopes, including one addressed to I G F Smith, c/sx 760434, 405 Mess, H.M.S. Vengeance, c/o G.P.O. London, with a 1954 postmark. Further official documents include a Doncaster branch Sea Cadet Corps letterhead and fragments of On His Majesty’s Service (O.H.M.S.) stationery.
Photography ephemera from Hong Kong includes multiple cards and slips for Kwong Ming Studio and Photo Supplies, located at 18 Hennessy Road. A pink negative album envelope is handwritten with No. 3221, Mr Smith, and dated 30-6-46. The lot also contains a roll of film, loose black-and-white portrait and landscape negatives, and a small black negative holder.
Educational and miscellaneous items comprise the schoolbook First Steps by H. M. B. Brown with a blue running figure pattern, a Keep Fit English booklet by Haydn Richards (Number 21), and a booklet titled The World featuring a globe illustration. A fragment of a Dinky Toys by Meccano catalogue and a piece of vintage Alpine-themed wrapping paper are also present, along with various receipts and Doncaster postal marks.
