A pair of French stoneware decanter jugs, traditionally used for Calvados brandy. Each vessel is finished in a dark matte brown-black glaze with a subtle metallic lustre. The baluster-form bodies are decorated in high relief with applied sprigged decoration depicting apple boughs, including textured leaves and fruit. Both jugs feature an applied scroll-form band with raised lettering. One jug is inscribed VIEUX CALVADOS and is fitted with a figural stopper in the form of a man’s head wearing a soft cap. The second jug is inscribed CALVADOS and is topped with a figural stopper depicting a man with a prominent beard and traditional-style clothing. These items are characteristic of the ceramic production associated with the Normandy region.
