A mid-20th-century floral still life painting executed in oil on hardboard. The composition features a vibrant and dense arrangement of orange poppies, purple irises, and small yellow blossoms held within a fluted white ceramic vase. Set against a dark foreground, the arrangement is backed by a large, scalloped green tray which provides a bold contrast to the neutral upper background. The work is characterised by thick, expressive brushwork and a rich use of colour. The painting is housed in an ornate gilt-composition swept frame, featuring pierced foliate and shell-moulded corner and centre ornaments in the Louis XV style. The verso shows the hardboard support secured with nails into the wooden frame rebate. There are some faint, illegible pencil inscriptions on the left side of the frame’s reverse and some incidental white paint splashes. A makeshift hanging mechanism using wire and green garden twine is attached to the reverse.
