A set of four carved oak side chairs in the Flemish or Neo-Renaissance revival style, dating to the late 19th century. The set is composed of two closely matched pairs. The first pair features high backs with ornate crestings deeply carved with North Wind or Green Man grotesque masks amongst foliate scrolls and acanthus leaves. The second pair features similar foliate and floral scrollwork crestings without the central mask. All four chairs feature barley-twist uprights topped with turned finials, with matching barley-twist legs and H-frame stretchers. The timber is finished in a dark, lustrous stain. Two chairs are upholstered in mustard-yellow velvet with gold-toned gimp trim, while the other two chairs are finished in a gold-toned patterned damask fabric with decorative trim. The chairs exhibit traditional joinery with heavy hand-carved details and decorative turnings. No maker marks, labels, or stamps are visible.
