A Soviet-era Russian Palekh lacquer trinket box, constructed from papier-mache with a black lacquer finish. The oval lid is hand-painted in the traditional Palekh style using tempera and gold leaf, illustrating a scene from Alexander Pushkin’s The Tale of Tsar Saltan. The artwork depicts Prince Gvidon with a bow, rescuing the Swan Princess from a bird of prey amidst stylized waves and foliage. The central image is framed by a delicate gold-leaf scrollwork border. Several Cyrillic inscriptions are present on the lid. Along the bottom edge is the title СКАЗКА О ЦАРЕ САЛТАНЕ (Skazka o Tsare Saltane, translated as The Tale of Tsar Saltan). On the right-hand side, vertical inscriptions identify the village of origin as Палех (Palekh), the artist as Бобрина А. (A. Bobrina), and the date 1976 г. (1976).
