Another Great Auction
A pair of oval, convex porcelain plaques decorated with hand-painted overglaze enamel genre scenes after the Spanish Baroque artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. One plaque depicts a scene based on Murillo’s The Grape and Melon Eaters, featuring two young boys seated outdoors sharing fruit. The second plaque depicts a young boy and girl with a basket of grapes and other fruit, in the manner of Murillo’s genre paintings such as The Little Fruit Seller. Each plaque is mounted onto a circular board wrapped in a light green, textured fabric, possibly silk or linen. No manufacturer marks, artist signatures, or model numbers are visible on the front of the plaques or on the mounts. The fabric mounts feature paper labels with inventory numbers 4854 and a cursive letter L.
