Buyer's Premium:

A set of four figurative sculptures hand-carved from a dense, dark hardwood, traditionally ebony (Dalbergia melanoxylon). These carvings are executed in the Makonde style of East Africa, associated with Tanzania and Mozambique. The set consists of four figures in varying poses: one figure standing with a vessel balanced on the head, a kneeling figure holding a long-necked gourd or vessel, a seated figure, and a standing figure with hands at their sides. Characteristic stylised features include almond-shaped eyes, prominent brows, and incised geometric patterns on the foreheads and cheeks representing scarification. The surfaces show a dark, semi-polished patina with textured details to the hair and clothing. Each figure is carved with an integral base. These items are representative of trade art from the mid-to-late 20th century.
