A Chinese export chest constructed from camphor wood, featuring extensive high-relief hand-carved panels. The lid and front display traditional narrative scenes including figures within garden landscapes, bridges, and architectural elements such as pagodas. The carvings are finished with polychrome pigments and gilded highlights, set within black-lacquered borders featuring carved floral details. The piece is fitted with a large circular brass lock plate and latch. The interior is unlined, revealing the natural grain of the camphor wood. The chest is raised on four shaped bracket feet.
