A French silver sugar basket, or panier a sucre, of oval form featuring an intricate pierced gallery and a central swing handle. The body is decorated with repeating geometric and foliate pierced patterns, further enhanced by fine engraving. The hinged swing handle is attached to the body via two finely cast and applied terminals modelled as harnessed ox or bull heads. The handle itself is decorated with a central motif of bundled leaves or husks. The piece stands on a circular pedestal foot, which is finished with an engraved Vitruvian wave or repeating scroll border.
A lozenge-shaped maker’s mark is present on the interior base of the bowl. The mark contains a small circular punch with the numeral 1 at the top, which indicates French first standard silver with a purity of .950. Below this are the initials G P R arranged horizontally, situated above an indistinct symbol.
