Another Great Auction
A Victorian sterling silver cigarette case of rectangular form with rounded corners and a polished exterior. The interior is finished with a gold wash and features two hinged, pierced-work retainers. These retainers are intricately engraved and pierced with a foliate scroll motif, each centred with a classical mask in a sunburst surround. The interior is struck with a full set of London hallmarks for 1887, including the maker mark S.M for Sampson Mordan and Co, the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard head for London, the date letter M, and the Queen Victoria duty mark. The maker mark, lion passant, and date letter are also present on the retainers.
