A realist watercolor portrait on textured paper depicting an elderly gentleman identified as Edward J. Martin. The subject is shown in profile, seated with hands clasped, wearing black academic or legal robes over a white collar and dark blue sleeves. The composition is executed in a controlled realist style with fine detail in the facial features and hair. To the left of the subject is a vertical monogram within a rectangular border containing the letters M, E, and S, accompanied by the date 1933. The verso includes a printed exhibition label for Entry D, number 621, and a handwritten inscription in blue ink reading: Edward J Martin painted by his daughter Ethel. On exhibition at Walker Art Gallery Liverpool. The work is presented in a dark wood frame with a wide off-white mount.
