Another Great Auction
This collection of several leather-bound volumes comprises Francis Grose’s The Antiquities of England and Wales. The title page of Volume II identifies the author as Francis Grose Esqr. F.A.S. and lists the publisher as S. HOOPER. No. 25, Ludgate-hill, with the publication date MDCCLXXIII (1773). The work is bound in contemporary full leather in quarto format. The spines feature decorative gilt-tooling, raised bands, and red leather labels lettered GROSE’S ANTIQUITIES. Several volumes include oval gilt-stamped volume numbers, including 1 and 3. The title page features a central engraved oval vignette depicting ruins, dated March 18th 1774 within the plate, accompanied by a quotation from Shakespeare.
