An antique Alformant A medical fumigation or disinfection lamp produced by The Formalin Hygienic Company, London. This late Victorian or Edwardian period device is constructed with a cylindrical body of polished sheet copper featuring decorative incised banding. A large arched aperture on one side reveals an internal brass mechanism, including a horizontal rod with a knurled adjustment knob. The base flares to a stepped foot with an applied brass identification band. The top of the cylinder is fitted with a dark-toned metal liner containing three rows of circular ventilation holes to allow the dispersal of vapours. The applied brass band is embossed with the vertically aligned letters ALFORMANT followed by an A, the characters R. L. P. denoting Registered Letters Patent, and the curved text THE FORMALIN HYGIENIC COMPANY.
