Another Great Auction
A polished pewter tankard produced by Pinder Brothers of Sheffield to commemorate the conclusion of the 1982 Falklands War. The vessel is of cylindrical form featuring a flared base and an ornate S scroll handle with acanthus leaf detailing. The body is extensively decorated with engraved motifs relating to Operation Corporate. The primary face is inscribed THE FALKLANDS with the dates Argentine Invasion 2nd April 1982 and Argentine Surrender 14th June 1982, positioned above a detailed depiction of the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible (R05). The wrap-around engraving includes a map of the Falkland Islands identifying East Falkland, West Falkland, and the capital, Stanley. The map is overlaid with a large British Union Flag and the Falkland Islands Coat of Arms featuring a ram and ship with the motto DESIRE THE RIGHT. The design further incorporates figures of British infantrymen in combat gear and a second naval vessel. The base is stamped with the maker’s mark Pinder Bros in a script-like font, alongside a circular trade mark, the letters RD indicating a registered design, and the pattern number 113.
