Another Great Auction
A cast brass letter opener featuring a figural terminal in the form of a Pierrot clown, designed in the Art Nouveau style. The piece is of one-piece cast construction. The terminal depicts the head and shoulders of a Pierrot character wearing a traditional ruffled collar and a tunic with three prominent buttons. The obverse of the blade is decorated in low relief with foliate scrolls, leaves, and a bird motif, terminating in a panel of cross-hatched detail towards the tip. The reverse of the blade displays a stippled or hammered texture, while the reverse of the figural terminal is hollow-cast. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible on the item.
