A late 19th-century walnut purdonium or coal scuttle, featuring figured veneers with a distinctive circular grain pattern on the slanted lid. The piece is fitted with ornate, pierced brass strap hinges designed with scrolling foliate motifs. The top is mounted with a substantial brass twist-style handle with turned finials and is finished with a scalloped gallery. A small brass pull knob is located on the lower edge of the hinged lid. The unit is supported by internal casters and has an unfinished wooden interior.
