A folio-sized technical plate volume for Zerah Colburn’s definitive work, Locomotive Engineering and the Mechanism of Railways. This is Volume II of the set, consisting entirely of large-scale engineering drawings and architectural plans. The work was published by William Collins, Sons, & Company in London and Glasgow, circa 1871. The volume contains numerous detailed plates illustrating the development of steam locomotives and railway carriages of the mid-19th century. Notable engravings include an express passenger locomotive manufactured by Beyer, Peacock & Co. of Manchester for the South Eastern Railway of Portugal, as well as detailed designs for the Metropolitan Railway and a nineteen-foot carriage underframe. The drawings provide comprehensive technical details, including elevations, sections, and mechanical component diagrams. The plates are printed on heavy paper stock typical of the period.
