A mid-century commemorative maritime and hospitality brass plaque celebrating the inaugural visit of the Holland-America Line ocean liner, SS Nieuw Amsterdam, to the El Conquistador Hotel and Club in Las Croabas, Puerto Rico. The construction comprises an engraved brass plate with black-filled lettering, mounted to a finished wooden board base. The plate is secured by four brass screws at the corners. It bears the following transcription in block capital letters: TO COMMEMORATE THE FIRST CALL OF THE SS NIEUW AMSTERDAM OF THE HOLLAND-AMERICA LINE AT LAS CROABAS, PUERTO RICO NOVEMBER 9, 1969 EL CONQUISTADOR HOTEL AND CLUB LOU PURO, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD. This item represents a historical link between the Dutch shipping company Holland-America Line and the luxury tourism sector of 1960s Puerto Rico. Lou Puro (1912-1983) was the developer and chairman of the El Conquistador Hotel.
