This framed colour print, likely a photogravure or chromolithograph, depicts the iconic ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War in 1854. The work is after the celebrated 1894 oil painting by military artist Richard Caton Woodville Jr. The scene illustrates a dynamic and chaotic cavalry charge, featuring British hussars and lancers on horseback galloping through a dusty valley towards a smoke-obscured enemy position. In the background, a mountainous landscape is visible under a hazy sky, with a small fortification on a distant ridge. The print is signed in the plate at the lower left ‘R. Caton Woodville 1894’. It is presented in a dark, polished wooden frame with a gilded inner slip and protected by glass. A brass title plaque is affixed to the bottom centre of the frame, bearing the inscription ‘THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE / Richard Caton 1856-1927’.
