A First World War service medal trio, colloquially known as a Pip, Squeak, and Wilfred group, awarded to Private J. E. Bates of the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment (The Sherwood Foresters). The group consists of three medals swing-mounted on a contemporary ribbon bar with original period silk ribbons. The first is a 1914-15 Star, struck in bronze, featuring a four-pointed star with crossed swords and a central scroll dated 1914-15, surmounted by a crown. The second is a British War Medal 1914-20, struck in silver, featuring the bareheaded effigy of King George V on the obverse. The third is an Allied Victory Medal, struck in bronze, featuring the winged figure of Victory. The medals are officially impressed on the edges with the recipient’s details. The British War Medal is inscribed 3357 PTE. J. E. BATES . NOTTS & DERBY R. and the Victory Medal is inscribed 3357 PTE. J. E. BATES NOTTS & DERBY R. The ribbons show the standard rainbow pattern for the Victory Medal, the orange, white, and blue of the War Medal, and the red, white, and blue of the 1914-15 Star.
