A pair of officially named silver campaign medals awarded to Petty Officer G. F. Smith, Royal Navy. The first item is a Naval General Service Medal (1915-62) featuring the Elizabeth II Type 1 uncrowned head obverse, used between 1953 and 1962. The medal’s rim is incised with the service number, name, rank, and shore establishment: C/JX. 760474 G. F. SMITH P. O. H. M. S. VERNON. It is suspended from its regulation ribbon of white with blue edges and a central blue stripe.
The second item is a General Service Medal (1918-62) featuring the Elizabeth II Type 2 crowned head obverse. It is fitted with the silver Near East clasp, which was awarded for service during the Suez Canal Crisis in 1956. The rim is incised with the recipient’s name and rank: G. F. SMITH P. O. R. N. This medal is currently mounted on an incorrect ribbon of red and white horizontal stripes.
The lot also includes two loose ribbon segments: the correct purple ribbon with green edges for the General Service Medal, and a composite strip of ribbon fragments. Recipient Petty Officer Smith served with H.M.S. Vernon, which was the Royal Navy’s primary specialist school for torpedoes, mines, and electrical engineering based in Portsmouth.
