A hand-built studio pottery model of a lion, depicted in a seated pose with the head turned upwards. The piece is crafted from a ceramic stoneware body and finished with a matte, tonal brown slip or glaze. The sculpture is characterised by its expressive features, including large inset eyes, a broad snout with impressed dot detailing, and a protruding tongue. The mane and tail tip are meticulously detailed with numerous hand-applied fine ceramic coils, creating a dense, shaggy texture that contrasts with the smoother modelling of the body. The piece reflects the tradition of whimsical or grotesque animal figures in contemporary British studio pottery. No maker’s marks or signatures are evident.
Height: 11 inches.
