A pair of mahogany side chairs dating from the mid-to-late 19th century. Each chair features a characteristic balloon-shaped back frame with an intricately carved openwork splat composed of scrolling foliate motifs and a central shield-shaped tablet. The top rail is further embellished with carved leaf details. The chairs have serpentine-fronted, stuff-over seats upholstered in a dusty pink velvet fabric, finished with a coordinated braid trim. They are supported on cabriole front legs with carved foliate knees, terminating in scroll feet, and square-section splayed back legs. The chairs are constructed from mahogany, displaying a rich reddish-brown grain. Visible joinery includes the typical seams at the top of the balloon back where the shaped wood sections meet.
