A circular brass instrument plate, identified as a component for a nautical pelorus or compass binnacle, manufactured by the firm Alex Mabon and Sons of Glasgow. The plate features two concentric scales; the inner scale is graduated from 0 to 360 degrees in 10-degree increments, while the outer scale is a quadrantal scale marked 0-90-0-90. The face is engraved with a large capital N at the 0/360 position and a W at the 270-degree position. The component is designed with two projecting rectangular mounting tabs, each containing four small pre-drilled holes. There is a large central circular aperture and two smaller circular cutouts positioned within the main body. The reverse side shows a raised, central cylindrical boss with a flanged base. The maker’s information is clearly engraved on the face.
