A late 19th-century medical instrument set designed by Dr Richard Liebreich for the examination of the interior of the eye. The set is housed in its original wood-framed case covered in a black textured leather-effect material. The interior is lined with red velvet and silk, featuring custom-fitted recesses for the components. The set includes a hand-held ophthalmoscope instrument with an ebonised handle and a circular metal-mounted mirror assembly. This assembly contains a central aperture and a small clip intended for holding lenses. The case also contains two large glass condensing lenses and a set of five smaller auxiliary glass lenses of varying powers, stored within a silk pocket in the lid. The top of the case lid bears a faded gold-stamped inscription reading Dr. Liebreichs Ophthalmoscope. Richard Liebreich (1830–1917) was a significant figure in ophthalmology, and this portable model became a standard diagnostic tool during the Victorian era.
