A vintage Russian Fedoskino lacquer miniature painting box constructed from black lacquered papier-mâché. The rectangular lid features a hand-painted scene depicting two long-legged birds, resembling herons or cranes, amongst reeds in a marsh landscape at dusk. The composition is executed using oil paints over a luminous, iridescent background characteristic of the Fedoskino school, often achieved through the use of mother-of-pearl or metallic leaf underlays. The upper right corner of the lid is signed in gold Cyrillic script B. Laricheva and dated 81. The underside of the base is stamped in gold with Made in USSR. Included with the box is an original paper factory label from the Fedoskino Factory of Miniature Painting (Федоскинская фабрика миниатюрной живописи) which includes handwritten details and a purple quality control stamp.
