A French cast and chased brass desk inkwell, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The piece features a square, stepped base decorated with relief borders of stylized foliate and geometric motifs. At the centre is a square well with a hinged lid, which displays matching decorative patterns and is topped with a small, turned brass finial. The interior contains a removable white ceramic liner for ink. The underside of the base is stamped with the mark MADE IN FRANCE and includes hand-incised characters reading WP 11/27, likely a former inventory number. The well is secured to the base by two square nuts.
