A Russian lacquer box from the Fedoskino village, hand-crafted from papier-mâché with a polished black lacquer exterior and a vibrant red lacquer interior. The lid features a finely painted oil miniature depicting two ballerinas in white tutus practicing at a barre within a sunlit studio, executed in the realistic style characteristic of the Fedoskino school. The composition is framed by a delicate gold-painted foliate scroll border. The lid bears three Cyrillic inscriptions in gold paint: Иконов (Ikonov) at the top right, signifying the artist; Балерины (Ballerinas) in the centre right, providing the title; and Федоскино (Fedoskino) at the bottom right, identifying the village of origin. Typical of this school, the painting utilizes the luminosity of the underlying layers to create depth and light.
Length: approximately 10.8 cm.
