A Great War King’s Certificate on Discharge, also known as a King’s Certificate of Honourable Discharge, issued to members of the British and Commonwealth forces disabled during service. The lithograph design is by the illustrator Bernard Partridge and is signed Bernard Partridge inv del in the print at the lower right of the central illustration. The imagery features Britannia seated and presenting a scroll to a British infantryman and a naval service member. The design is topped by the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom and is bordered by architectural columns and scrolls listing the British Isles, Oversea Dominions, Indian Empire, Colonies, and Protectorates. The calligraphed text identifies the recipient as 454995 Private James Albert Ryman of the 59th Canadian Infantry Battalion. The certificate states he served with honour and was disabled in the Great War, being honourably discharged on March 13th 1919. It bears the facsimile signature of King George V (George R.I.). The document is housed in a simple black wooden frame under glass.
