This Chinese hand-knotted area rug is crafted with a wool pile on a cotton foundation, featuring a design characteristic of the mid-20th-century Nichols or Tientsin style. The composition centres on a soft steel-blue field with a circular floral medallion containing a stylized Shou longevity character. The field is further decorated with scattered auspicious motifs, including vases of flowers symbolizing peace and various floral sprays rendered in shades of rose pink, ivory, and sage green. A main ivory-ground border contains a continuous trailing floral vine, flanked by an inner fretwork guard border and an outer plain blue edge. The rug is finished with thick, knotted cotton fringes at both ends.
