A contemporary abstract studio pottery sculpture of chimeric, zoomorphic form, likely dating from the late 20th century. The piece is constructed from glazed ceramic and features a rhinoceros-like head with a single horn and snout, with deeply recessed eyes highlighted with blue glaze. The central section is heavily textured with dense, hand-modelled finger-like protrusions resembling organic or coral-like growth. The rear section is rounded and segmented with overlapping plates decorated with impressed circular motifs and a hand-painted geometric band of triangles in pink, blue, and green glazes. The piece features a complex palette of earth-toned glazes including mottled browns, creams, and tans, with deeper pools of blue and green glaze in the recessed areas. The finish varies from high-gloss on smooth sections to a matte texture in the more complex areas. No maker’s marks or signatures are evident.
Length: 14.5 cm.
