A mid-20th century British military hand-operated gas warning rattle, likely Second World War era. The device is constructed with a dark-stained hardwood handle and ratchet mechanism mounted within a heavy-gauge steel frame. It features a wooden spring tongue or reed that produces a loud clacking sound when the handle is rotated around the frame. This hybrid metal and wood design was widely used by the British Army and Air Raid Precautions (ARP) services. Faint impressed markings are visible on the central wooden tongue, though they are not clearly legible.
