A sterling silver figural brooch of oval form, featuring a relief-cast unicorn head in profile. The central motif is set within an openwork frame decorated with a floral wreath of roses and foliage. The unicorn’s spiralled horn, parts of the flowing mane, and several rose blossoms are finished with a yellow gilt-metal effect, creating a two-tone parcel-gilt appearance. The reverse of the frame is struck with a set of hallmarks in four shaped cartouches comprising the maker’s mark C J, the leopard’s head for the London Assay Office, the lion passant silver standard mark, and the lowercase serif date letter g for 1981. A separate mark stamped 925 is also present. The piece is fitted with a pin and safety catch mechanism to the reverse.
