A pair of bronzed brass bookends of heavy cast construction, each modelled as a horse clearing a five-bar gate. The horses are depicted in a dynamic, rearing pose, featuring hand-finished musculature and flowing manes. The five-bar gates include incised wood grain detailing and are supported by integral bases with a textured, stippled ground designed to represent turf or soil. The pair exhibits a naturally aged patina with some darker oxidation and tarnish concentrated in the recessed areas of the textured bases. The underside of each base appears to be polished and shows no visible marks or inscriptions.
