A pair of oil on canvas still life compositions by the artist Jessie V. Forsyth. The landscape-oriented work depicts a glass bowl overflowing with a variety of fruits including a pineapple, green and purple grapes, and apples, with additional apples and a pear resting on a dark surface in the foreground. The portrait-oriented painting features a cluster of four pears hanging amongst green and russet-toned leaves on a branch. Both works are executed in a traditional representational style with soft, blended brushwork and a muted palette. Each canvas is signed to the lower right or lower left corner ‘Jessie V. Forsyth.’. The reverse of each canvas bears a black ink supplier’s stamp reading ‘ROBERT MILLER, 186, TRONGATE, GLASGOW.’. The paintings are housed in decorative gilt wood and gesso frames; the landscape frame features a tiered profile, while the portrait frame has a foliate-patterned border.
