A pair of Victorian style oil on panel paintings depicting prize livestock in the British folk art tradition. The first panel portrays a large dark-bodied ox standing in a pastoral landscape alongside its handler, who is depicted in a green frock coat and top hat. The second panel features an oversized pale yellow bull in profile within a similar rural setting. Both works are executed with the flat, illustrative brushwork characteristic of nineteenth-century agricultural portraiture. The paintings are housed in matching tiered dark wood frames with a reddish undertone. The reverse of each frame is finished with contemporary newsprint from The Illustrated London News, dated APRIL 20, 1889. Legible text on the backing includes Peter Robinson, Redfern Ladies’ Tailor, Coventry Machinists’ Company ‘Club’ Cycles, and Spring Fashions for 1889.
