A Victorian portrait miniature? depicting Colonel James Harrison of the Madras Horse Artillery. The subject is shown in a dark military coatee with elaborate braiding and a prominent cream-coloured cross-belt with a central buckle, consistent with Horse Artillery uniform of the mid-19th century. The officer is portrayed with short hair and side-whiskers. The oval image is set within a decorative foliate border and mounted behind glass in a substantial rectangular gilt wood and gesso frame. The frame features a beaded outer edge and a repeating egg and dart style inner moulding. The portrait is accompanied by an associated typed and handwritten identification label. The label includes a handwritten ink inscription reading ‘James Harrison’, followed by typed text stating ‘COLONEL JAMES HARRISON / MADRAS HORSE ARTILLERY, GRANDSON / OF R. HARRISON OF YORKSHIRE AND / SARAH LEE OF COTON HALL, / SHROPSHIRE. D. 1869 (Original at Knocknagoney)’. The note regarding the original suggests this example may be an early photographic or lithographic reproduction.
