A large bronzed equestrian sculpture in the Dogon style, depicting a warrior atop a highly stylized horse. The figure is constructed using the lost-wax casting method with an elongated, spindly form. The horse features a curved neck, tall upright ears, and an open mouth, with integral reins and trappings. The body of the animal is decorated with incised geometric ‘V’ and wave patterns, mimicking traditional textile or leather armour. The rider is depicted in a simplified form wearing a conical hat. The sculpture is mounted to a modern rectangular wooden base using flat-head screws and washers through the hooves. The metal surface has a dark brown patinated finish with areas of green oxidation and lighter brassy highlights on high-relief areas. A dark, filled circular patch is visible on the left side of the horse’s head.
Height: 54 cm.
