A late Victorian sterling silver condiment shaker or pounces, comprising the maker’s mark M&W in a rectangular cartouche for Mappin & Webb, a lion passant indicating sterling silver fineness, a three-towered castle assay mark for Sheffield, and the lowercase Gothic-style date letter e for 1897. The date letter e is further struck to one foot of each bird. The interior rims of the detachable lids bear matching partial hallmarks including the M&W maker’s mark, the lion passant, and the Sheffield castle mark.
