A glazed ceramic phrenology bust of traditional form, presented with an all-over crackle-glazed finish. The head is decorated with black transfer-printed divisions and text, categorising various mental faculties and propensities. The facial features are subtly modelled, with the cranium meticulously mapped into sections such as Mirthfulness, Ideality, Constructiveness, and Destructiveness. The side of the head features larger groupings including Perfecting Group and Selfish Propensities. The front of the base is printed with the title PHRENOLOGY BY L.N. FOWLER. One side of the pedestal base displays a scrolled cartouche containing the inscription L.N. FOWLER LUDGATE CIRCUS LONDON, while the opposite side features a matching cartouche reading ENTERED AT STATIONERS HALL. The base is further detailed with blue-lined borders.
