A commercial beam-balance counter scale of cast iron construction with a black painted finish. The instrument features a double-pedestal shaped base supporting a central beam mechanism with brass pivots. On the left, a circular brass pan is held by a curved iron cradle, while the right side features a shaped cast iron platform for weights. The lower central beam of the frame is embossed with the characters TO WEIGH 14 lb. The set is accompanied by a collection of graduated circular weights. Three iron weights situated on the brass pan are embossed A V E R Y followed by 2 lb, 1 lb, and 8 oz. Four smaller brass weights on the platform bear the markings 1 lb, 8 oz, 4 oz, and 2 oz. The scale represents the industrial heritage of W. & T. Avery Ltd of Birmingham.
