A pair of carved oak side chairs, frequently referred to as “Cromwellian” or Jacobean revival style, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The chairs are constructed from dark-stained oak and feature ornate, hand-carved detailing throughout. The backrests are characterised by a central vertical splat featuring pierced foliate and scrolling vine carvings, flanked by four plain vertical rails. The upper cresting is carved with prominent acanthus leaves. The stiles are topped with acorn-style finials and feature distinct barley-twist turning. The solid wood seats are square and heavily carved with a central eight-pointed sunburst or compass-star motif, bordered by a notched geometric pattern along the edges. The undercarriage consists of four legs; the front legs are decoratively turned with block joins and barley-twist sections, while the rear legs are plain. The chairs are braced by a H-stretcher, with the front stretcher also featuring barley-twist turning to match the stiles and front legs.
