A late Victorian? spinning chair constructed from a dark-stained wood, featuring three turned legs and an octagonal seat. The chair is decorated throughout with hand-painted botanical motifs depicting cherries and green foliage, framed by gilded scrolls and ribbons. The flat surfaces of the tall, tapered backrest and the seat feature a fine textured stippled? or pokerwork background. The backrest is surmounted by a wider octagonal section featuring a pierced heart hand-hold to the centre. The three legs are heavily turned with ring and bulbous detailing, finished with a textured hammered effect. The construction appears to be in the Arts and Crafts or European folk furniture tradition. No maker marks or signatures are visible.
