A vintage scientific laboratory instrument of cast iron and copper construction, functioning as a linear expansion apparatus or pyrometer. The device features a substantial black-painted cast iron base supporting a horizontal copper tube. The tube is mounted on two central supports and equipped with two vertical nipples, designed for the passage of steam to induce thermal expansion. One terminal of the tube is positioned against a fixed screw adjustment, while the opposing end engages a lever mechanism connected to a long mechanical pointer. This pointer traverses a large, curved, silvered scale engraved with numerical increments from 0 to 50 to indicate the degree of metal expansion. The frame exhibits a triangular cast iron housing for the scale and lever assembly. No maker names are legible on the instrument.
